What are things that you remember?

De-wei remembers the first time he lied to his family. How hard it was to look them in the eye and speak a falsehood as truth. He remembers when it became easy, knows when he got so good they couldn’t tell the truth apart. But at that time he was no longer a person to be trusted or trust and all they ever heard from him were lies.

He remembers the day he was forced to leave Ba Sing Se. Sixteen at the time and the crew he ran with bit off more than they could chew. His two oldest brothers claimed his crime as their own, they always felt responsible for him and how he chose to live. Mom, dad, his other brother and two sisters couldn’t face him when he told he was leaving. De-wei told him he’d be a better man outside of Ba Sing Se, an honest man like them and maybe one day he could make things right.

And for a while he was an honest man. Worked hard and told no lies. Some days he thought if his parents could see him, they would see the son they wanted. Eventually those days came to an end and he began traveling from city to city making a living in underground fighting circuits. Fighting had become second nature to him back home, and so did finding trouble. One day he took things too far - was it something he said, something he’d done? De-wei didn’t know, but he remembers the smiling faces as they cut his mouth open cheek to cheek.

Joker. The name stuck and while he doesn’t like the name he’s learned to see life a bit more humorously.

De-wei wasn’t ready for Republic City, he had expected something peaceful but was quickly engrossed in its underbelly. As expected of a person of his stature, he drew the attention of local triads and fell back into his Ba Sing Se roots. He formed his own gang to defend himself from constant recruitment, but that only led to more violence. At the end of it, his gang expanded and came into its own as a powerhouse: The Khoo Boys.
